This year is officially halfway over, and lately I have been very angry about the state of this country and extremely distraught over the nine precious Black lives that were taken by hate at Mother Emanuel A.M.E. Church in Charleston, North Carolina. The irony is at the same time that they were murdered, I was in the
middle of performing and really putting it on the crowd at Eve’s 10th Annual Summer Breeze Series in Chicago. Such has been my life recently; feeling out of step yet dragged down by the negative energy and incidents of the world, while simultaneously bringing the greatest joy to myself and the audience performing on stage. The more I think about it, the more I realize that my calling of music is the healing balm for the world and for people who either need an escape, inspiration, or a reason to dance, shout, scream, laugh, love…a reason to just BE!!! With each passing day I take my gift more seriously. If I personally didn’t have music, I would go crazy. It unifies us. It inspires us. It moves us.
I am in the process of mentally devising the plan and direction of my next record. I want to build on the foundation of #Catalyst, but I want also to push the boundaries and challenge myself and the listeners…you guys, ya dig? One thing is definitely true: this next record will include music that is progressive and that sends a message. The world needs some music with substance and a point of view that is unafraid to question authority, illuminate the ills of society and push for change. I strive to do that, while giving you good grooves to bob your head to, good melodies (played and sung) that you will remember, and with honest emotion that captures you from the first track to the last. My mission from now on is to present music that you can feel and music that will make you think.
In the meantime, these next 4 months are filled with performances with Brian Culbertson, #MJandThePlayers, and my fellow Chicago comrades in music. On Saturday, July 11th, I will be a featured artist (and bringing my band as well) at the Idlewild Music Fest in historic Idlewild, MI…a place that was a famous resort for African-Americans in the early 20th Century. This festival is part of a bigger plan to return Idlewild to its former greatness, and I am excited to be a part of it. In August, I am performing at Chicago State University’s Jazz In The Grazz Series on the 12th, and also returning to M Vie Restaurant for Intimate Thursdays (August 6th, September 10th & October 1st). October culminates with two of my highest profile performances to date: an evening opening slot at the 29th Annual Catalina Island JazzTrax Festival on Saturday, October 17th; and, I will be a featured artist on Capital Jazz Supercruise IX (October 24th – November 1st). And, finally…for the first time in 13 years, I will be performing with my old band Fat Time at Martyr’s in Chicago on Friday, September 25th!!!
Tickets will be on sale very soon.
Please check out the Appearances page for more information of my upcoming shows. Thank you for your positive energy and prayers (those who do)…they keep me going. One Love.
